Escalating Inequality and Poverty
In this course, you will explore economic inequality and poverty in the United States and specifically here in Portland. You will engage with the complex history and realities of economic inequality which exists at every level of human community, from local to global, and is composed of overlapping and interrelated systems of education, income, housing, taxation, democracy, banking, public health, workplace policies, and many others. You will gain an awareness of how structures of oppression affect the systemic nature of economic inequality. Finally, you will explore ways in which inequality and poverty can be reduced.
Rev.Connie Yost advises that she will work with representatives from your congregation to tailor the curriculum to your needs, i.e. a one-time workshop, or weekly sessions of any length. The curriculum can also be tailored for youth.
Facilitator: Rev. Connie Yost is an affiliated community minister with West Hills Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, Portland. She is the founder of Friends Stay Warm which provides cash assistance and advocacy to farm and other low-wage workers and detainees. She is the President of Farm Worker Ministry Northwest.

Faith Based Poverty Immersion Institute -
Virtual Training
Act Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly - Micah 6:8
This intensive two-day Poverty Immersion Institute provides a grounded understanding of poverty and what we – as people of faith – can do to assist people more successfully in moving out – and staying out – of poverty. This institute is designed for members of the faith-based community—who acknowledge God’s biblical mandate to address the needs of the poor. Jesus was “anointed to bring good news to the poor” and brought healing and hope to the voiceless, powerless, and those trapped in systemic injustices. We are called to do the same. This training will provide us a holistic approach in which to better advocate for and empower the neighbors in our community who are disenfranchised, marginalized, or live in poverty.
